We have a launch...

Tomorrow marks the release date for Dark Prints Press’s first publication, the anthology ‘An Eclectic Slice of Life’ (which I have edited and co-published). To mark the special occasion, we are hosting an online launch party. Since the fourteen contributors are scattered across the globe, this is the best way to get them together. You can read excerpts from each story in the anthology, and there will be fun links to many stories (such as crazy websites, videos, and flash games).

The online launch will be via the Dark Prints Press Facebook page, from 3-5pm this Sunday (12/12/2010), Perth, Western Australia time. That’s GMT+0800, so if you are in the eastern states of Australia, it will be ~6pm (daylight savings), NZ ~8pm, UK ~7am, US 11pm (Sat – LA) to 2am (NY). The Dark Prints Press Facebook page is here:

Overhaul

Yes, I am most definitely alive. Have been extremely busy on the Dark Prints Press side, though, and most of my blogging efforts are going into that for now. I still get the occasional chance to write, don't worry - I am getting stuck into the second part of a young adult series, and drafting the plot of a older children's book.

I will be updating this blog to match Blogger's new layouts and technology, and then you will finally see some posts of relevance. Until then,

Announcing the arrival of a new small press publisher, co-founded by yours truly!

DARK PRINTS PRESS
Shining a light on dark fiction

Dark Prints Press is a brand new Australian independent publisher who aims to publish works of dark fiction (encompassing crime, thriller, speculative fiction (horror, dark fantasy) and dark comedy). Its initial focus is on an adult market, with the desire to also venture into the young adult market in the future.

The small press is a partnership between West Australians Avril and Craig Bezant, who aim to provide another, much-needed avenue for a range of printed fiction, including short story collections, novellas, and novels. Their publications will range from lavish trade paperback editions to small, pulpy works, depending on the relevance to the story and its genre. Digital publications (e-books) of the publisher's list are forecasted in the future.

The first publication for Dark Prints Press will be an anthology of the best stories from the online magazine Eclecticism E-zine, an e-zine that has been shortlisted for 2 awards, is archived in the National Library of Australia, and has established a dedicated readership and subscription list over the past 3 years. So I have to milk any publicity I can get - you understand, of course. Recently, author Martin Livings posted a comment on his LiveJournal site after reading my crime thriller novel, 'Ryder's Block':

Ryder's Block, Craig Bezant - this one you won't find on any shelves. Yet. A work-in-progress by my mentee from the AHWA mentor program some years ago, I finally got around to reading the entire thing, and it was a hoot and a holler. Keep your eyes open for Craig, he'll be everywhere before you know what hit you.

Wow, that makes me shiver with pride. If only an agent or publisher were to read such a comment...

AIMS OF THIS BLOG - REVISED

Due to the insane (yet treasured) amount of free time spent on my writing/reviewing/editing/publishing ventures, I have made the decision to solely use this blog for such messages, as it has largely been anyway. Upon reading the last post, I would have really liked to have talked about my holiday to Malaysia and listed some inspirational points for writing discovered whilst there, but it would just be too much of a diversion from my other work. I recently returned from a trip to Melbourne with some solid aims/goals in mind. So, to clarify, this blog is for:

1) Writing news, advice, market news.
2) Review and Interview news, linked to my work with HorrorScope
3) Eclecticism E-zine news - everything about the e-zine I edit and publish
in particular
4) The publication of a print anthology of Eclecticism

Should you tune in, I will do my best to post a weekly or fortnightly note about the steps I take to publish this anthology. If you are interested in how this process works, it should be very informative - if you have questions about any of the steps, don't hesitate to ask.

Back to life, back to reality...

Ah, it's been a while. Have I been slacking off? Occasionally. Well, thinking about it, but didn't have the time. Since my last post I have finished my teaching degree and worked as a relief teacher (primary school) to close off 2009. With regards to my own writing, I became lost in the editing of a YA/Children's novel, which I am now preparing to send to publishers/ editors/ agents/ anyone who will look at it. My e-zine, Eclecticism E-zine, has taken the remainder of my creative juices - Issue #11 is out now, just scraping into the month of January (by about 6 hours) and keeping my deadline-reaching abilities intact.

It's a great issue - very proud. With a theme of 'Ghost Story', you know you want to look at what's inside!

Hmmm, well, the biggest reason for the gap between blog posts is that my mother-in-law surprised our family with a trip to Singapore and Malaysia (mostly Melaka). Nine members of our family from Perth all travelled over there to surprise the hell out of my wife's grandmother, who did not know we were coming at all. Priceless. And we stayed there for one month. That's right - one month! New Years Eve was such a blast, with the biggest fireworks celebration I have ever seen (that puts our Australia Day crap to shame, because it had the one element our drunken parties miss - people having a great time together). In fact, as the memories come flooding back I think I will download all my photographs and post on special little moments - a bit of my writing world meets personal world.

Forthcoming Titles that might interest you

I was browsing through some of the publicity brochures from publishers and began to make a list of titles/authors that caught my eye. Being a reviewer means that you often don't get to pick what you read all the time (though HorrorScope tries its best to make it that way). But if I could choose some titles... Well, I decided to type out said list to let you all know of some forthcoming novels I would love to read and review.

Note that most of these are from the Hachette Australia/Orion/Gollancz group, simply because they send me the most information. This means most novels are in the crime/thriller/horror genre. Most books are also from international writers. Don't take this list out of context and say I should have included such and such - I probably had no idea their book was coming out. In other words, please feel free to comment and include a book you are looking forward to being released.

And don't get me started on my 'To Read' list outside of reviewing. I am a bookaholic, and each week I have more to add to my pile of books I can't wait to read but never have the time to...

Ringing the Bell of Change

Hi all,

Tomorrow, Term 4 of school starts in WA. Which means my daughter will no longer be tearing up the carpet, chasing the dogs maniacally and asking for more, more, more lollies, ice cream, etc. (I kid, she is an angel 70% of the time). Which means the house will be rather quiet. That, for the most part, is a good thing - for my writing, at least. During the past 2 weeks I have typed up the first draft of my YA paranormal adventure novel. This was written a while ago now, so it's good to return to the story. The first draft clocked in at roughly 28 000 words, which is great - this means I have room to play around with. It was the first time I have written something by just sticking to the bare bones of a racing plot. Usually I am having to hack out scene after scene that I loved but just isn't relevant. This time I get to add certain details I missed, hopefully without impacting the overall story. Then it will be time to get it out there for reading, more editing, and so on...

Looking at my posts, it's been a while. Well, that's because...DRUM ROLL... I worked my a** off and I have now completed my teaching degree. That's right, the University confirmation is through - I am a qualified primary school teacher (K-7)! After 6 years (4 of the course, cut in the middle by 2 years in Melbourne for my wife's work, where I was full-time dad), that means a hell of a lot to me. How does that impact my writing? Not much for now, honestly. I will be trying to get relief work as I wait for a permanent position, and my writing will typically be undertaken in the shadowy hours of the night, and/or during the day when I have no work.

My Eclecticism E-zine's second anniversary issue (#9) was a huge success. Two of its contributors have gone on to win BIG prizes - Joseph D'Lacey grabbed the British Fantasy Society's Best Newcomer Award, and Jason Fischer won the L.Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest (second quarter 2009). Well done to those two very talented writers! Issue #10 of Eclecticism E-zine is coming along smoothly, with most acceptances and rejections going out in the next 2 days.

I'll keep you posted on more writing developments as they happen - hopefully more often, now.

For those who haven't glanced over at HorrorScope lately, I have posted a couple of reviews (Chris Simms' 'The Edge' and Kaaron Warren's 'Slights', both wonderful books) and *drum roll* my interview with Scottish crime writer Stuart MacBride. I interviewed him during the wild storm in Perth on Monday night, and also attended his author talk at the Melville Civic Centre.

I was mighty chuffed to see how much of a pleasant guy he was - willing to talk at length about anything I asked. He really loves his craft, and gave me more experience as to how to talk to a crowd about my own writing (I try to go to as many author talks as possible for this very reason - not all are good!). If you haven't bought a copy of his latest novel, 'Blind Eye', you need to - I'll be posting the review for that shortly (it's damn good, which is why I'm saying to buy it).

Now to practice my own speech/reactions for interviews and author talks, just in case...

A Double Dose of Delight

Fantastic Scottish crime writer Stuart MacBride is touring Australia during July, and I will be interviewing him during his Perth leg of the tour! I became an instant fan after reading ‘Flesh House’ last year, which I reviewed and recommended on HorrorScope’s end of year editorial list. I am deep into his next novel, ‘Blind Eye’, and have not been disappointed (well, thus far). So I will try my hardest to act professional and not like a gushing fan. Now, to think of some interesting questions...

As if that wasn’t enough, the 2nd Anniversary of my Eclecticism E-zine is fast approaching (31 July 2009) and to celebrate the occasion I have had a little (well, HUGE) help from UK author Joseph D’Lacey (of ‘Meat’ and ‘The Garbage Man’ fame (Bloody Books, UK)), who is contributing a long short story to the issue! I can’t wait for you all to read the story, because it’s a good one (of course). And of course I haven’t stopped fainting from the kind contribution. It’s all quite surreal to me.

Don't judge me (because I'll be judging you)

If you have not heard/received the marketing by now, I have been chosen as one of three judges to compile the shortlist for this year's Australian Shadows Awards, run by the Australian Horror Writers Association (AHWA).

Shane Jiraiya Cummings is the Director this year, and has made the extremely sensible move to split the awards into three categories - Short Fiction, Long Fiction, and Edited Publication. This ensures a novel is not competing with a short story, etc, which I found to be rather bizarre in the past (but hey, maybe that's just me).

I can't wait to compile the list - I've already begun reading, obviously. It's wonderful to see the amount of work Australian writers are trying hard to put out there.

Time slips on by

Wow, I finally freed up some time to write on my blog and website, and realised how long it's been since I've done so. I apologise (to myself, really). So, in my last blog I stated that I would be heading to Adelaide for the Conjecture convention. Well, obviously I took said trip, had a blast (didn't win the Ditmar Award, but c'mon, I lost to the Aussie master of horror), and met lots of wonderful writers/editors/illustrators/fans. I could fill an entire blog post with their names, but you know who you are - thanks for making me feel welcome in my first full convention, in another State I had never been to, no less.

During the convention I capatilised on being unable to write too much for the better part of seven weeks (due to my teaching prac). If I wasn't at a panel, drinking with aforementioned people, or exploring Adelaide, I was sitting down writing (actually, I took a notebook around and wrote in numerous spots around Adelaide). And boy, did I write - six chapters! So if I appeared rude to anyone (sitting at the bar alone, scribbling away) it's 'cause I have had months-worth of plotline boiling away in my head, and it all needed to get out!

I am really enjoying this crime/suspense novel - my main character is slowly being forced (coerced?) to slip back into a life of crime he did everything to pull himself out of, and that just makes me tingle as I write out the progress. I'll keep you updated on the novel's progress - I'm probably only a quarter of the way there yet. In the meantime, I've been typing out and editing my draft for a young adult novel. I've passed the 11 000 word mark and counting (the draft is obviously longer). But that's a post for another day.

Flying High

Hi all,

It's all booked - my plane tickets have been paid for (thanks, Nan and Pop!), the hotel room is reserved, and my convention fees are paid - I'm going to Conjecture!

I know, it's exciting. Conjecture is the National SF Convention, to be held in Adelaide from 5-8 June. It's during this convention that the Ditmar Awards are announced, in which I have been nominated for Best Fan Writer. I can't wait to experience it all, especially since I have never been to Adelaide before. Look out, local cafes, I'm on the prowl!

The downside to this is that I miss two days of teaching - I now have to cram it all in to an already bulging timetable (what with Foundation Day in WA on Monday). But I'll manage; it'll be worth it.

Pause for breath

Yes, I've been run off my feet, as of late, and barely have enough time for the necessities of life, such as breathing. Why? Well, I am in the middle of my final year's teaching prac and the planning and marking consumes almost every second of the day. For those who think teachers have it easy and leave at 3, you can pull that veil off your eyes now. But the effort will be worth it - I'm having a good time, and my teaching qualification and hence job is on the horizon (I think).

In writing news, I'm sure most in the dark fiction fan/writing community have heard of the recent release of this year's Ditmar Awards final nominations. I awaited the final ballot with a great sense of nervousness, wondering if my Eclecticism ezine would make this list. It didn't, but, lo and behold, I did! Yes, I've been nominated for Best Fan Writer, for my reviews on HorrorScope (and I presume the associated Black Magazine).

That took what little breath I had for quite a while. I am shocked and amazed and damn proud to be nominated. Reviewing novels has been wonderful, and to know that people are actually reading the reviews and enjoying them is the icing on the cake. My best times reviewing are when authors take the time to comment on your review - my last entries have received comments from Jonathan Maberry, Scott Sigler, Joseph D'Lacey, Dean Lorey, and many more. It is a testament that such writers are still humble enough to thank you - even if the review isn't all in their favour - and has been a wonderful example of what I will try to do should one of my novels actually make its way onto a bookshelf (that isn't mine).

I am so excited that I'm arranging my trip to Adelaide for the convention, Conjecture, where the Ditmar Awards will be nominated. That's right, in June I'll be visiting SA for the first time! I encourage you all to have a look at the nominations and vote (if you can, since its a Logies-style fans-only affair) as there are some wonderful, deserving entries, and I congratulate all my colleagues for their nominations - the night is going to be a HUGE party!

Tin Ducks 2009

Hi there,

My e-zine, Eclecticism, has been nominated once again for a Tin Duck Award (Best WA Fan Production), celebrating works from West Aussies. That makes it 2 years in a row for nominations! Since the e-zine has only been out in those 2 years, well, it makes me beam with pride.

A HUGE thanks goes out to all the contributors who help make the e-zine special, and to all the readers who think it's special. And of course, to those who actually nominated the e-zine, an extra-big thanks goes to all of you. The voting process now is part luck, part brown-nosing (aw, come on, you know it is) - you have to be a paying member of the convention to vote (Swancon, in Perth, where the award ceremony will be held). I'm thinking I'll be the man at the con with a suit made of hundred dollar bills... just joking. Good luck to all, it's a great lineup (although it saddened me not to see HorrorScope there).

One Down, One Up

Yesterday I finished the first draft of my first foray into a Young Adult novel. Now comes the very lengthy task of editing, as I know there is quite a bit to reshape (since the story morphed itself along the way). Should be fun though (yes, FUN - for the first couple of edits at least). Now comes the impossible task of placing the story in a genre (for queries to agents/publishers). It is an adventure/dark fantasy story. It is NOT a story about a boy wizard with glasses, which every agent/publisher seems to automatically think now when you mention fantasy (thanks, Rowling) even though fantasy is one of the broadest genres out there. What's in the story, you ask? Well, I can't tell you yet. Let's just say it involves a small country town, Lassetter's Reef, ley lines, a girl who can see auras and werewolves. That's just the first installment, too. Interesting?

So straight after finishing that novel, I began my next adult novel (yes, I don't stop). After my experience with the mentorship program for my last novel, I have decided to again focus on a crime thriller-style manuscript. Well, it will be more of a suspense thriller with crimes thrown in. Make sense? It doesn't have to, I haven't finished it yet.

And, since I realise my time is spent on (as yet) unpublished novels and people may forget who the hell I am, I also began two short stories, the first I have written in around a year (my last ones were 'Hot Sauce' (in Black Box) and 'Zombie Brewing' (in Ripples)). Should I finish those, I can't wait to try and place them.

Top 30 Part 3: TV Shows

Most of the time, I don't really watch television shows when they are actually on television; rather, I may watch it once or twice and if I like it I'll buy the DVD versions and slowly watch them. So, like the movie list, a lot of entries will be quite new shows; the rest of the list is made up of shows I grew up with (yes, even Rosanne. It may not be the best show in the world, but my family watched it every week while it was on the air). A quick scan of the list will emphasise how much I enjoy 20-30 minute bursts of humour. 30 Years Young

Yes, I've officially joined the 30s club. Valentine's Day 2009 was my 30th birthday. I celebrated by hosting a party at my house, with ~50 family members (and friends), many of which I have not seen in several years. It was a fantastic time, much too fast though. Especially since I spent several weeks preparing for it. One of the highlights of the night (for the relatives) was a slideshow I put together, containing many insightful pictures into my background (love those 80s fashions and furnishings). In that slideshow I also made a series of Top 30 lists (including images of the top 10 choices). This was an incredibly hard series of lists to make, many great choices left out. The lists were shaped by items that have affected me, remain burning in my memory, are in my actual collection, and so on. I thought I would share these lists with you. You can nod your head or pick on them, your choice. I will post 1 a day (there are 4). It makes sense to start with fiction. And yes, I realise several have multiple choices, it was just that hard to decide:

RIP another great

Too many heavyweight writers have passed away in the last year, including Sir Arthur C. Clarke and a score of sci-fi godfathers, Michael Crichton, and John Updike. I was very saddened to learn in the last few weeks that Donald E. Westlake joined that list, on New Year's Eve 2008. I came across the news by accident, whist looking at David Morrell's website, since I am a drifter in the world of news (I rarely watch the news on television since it is way too graphic for my 4-year old to view, so I rely on the Internet and newspapers).

I'm deeply saddened by the man's passing. I've really been getting my claws into Westlake's work (it started when I read 'The Hook' to make sure it was nothing like my crime novel). Many will also know him under the pseudonym Richard Stark. Westlake had the wonderful ability to inject humour, darkness and intelligence into all his mysteries. I encourage you all to look at his work - I only wish I could have met the master before it was too late.

'Stralia Day, Mate, & Mentorship Praise

Hi all,

I trust most celebrated Australia Day by getting drunk - go, Aussie, go! No, I'm not being mean, just realistic. Perhaps here in Perth if we had something more than fireworks to celebrate, everyone wouldn't feel the need to get trashed. Just saying. Or maybe it’s just the looming depressive recession. Me? I took my family to the movies, cooked a meal and, yes, had a beer. But just one, honest. Okay, two. While I can.

Well, if you've been reading my previous posts, you will know I've been very busy writing. I've now finished editing my crime thriller novel, which is being read by my wife for approval (and dissection). I am currently finishing the draft of a Young Adult novel I began during my trip to the Melbourne Writers Festival in August (2008). When I've finished that and begin its editing process, I will begin another adult novel, a different crime-slash-drama (involving the bad choice of reconnecting with one's past). I've been doing lots of research for that. Oh, and I actually started (but not finished) 3 short stories, the first I've attempted in a long time (I'm thinking a year, but could be wrong).

So, my plate's pretty full. But that's a wonderful thing - I couldn't imagine life if I stopped writing. If you feel like me, I want to give my praise to the Australian Horror Writers Association and its mentorship program. Accepted members are matched to a professional writer, be it for a short story, novel, article. I was lucky enough to be a mentoree last year, with author Martin Livings, for the crime thriller I recently completed. I encourage you to try, because it was more than worth it! Submissions begin at the start of February.

So, two more things - Eclecticism E-zine is ready to go, and will be released this Friday 30 January. And, the big one, I will be turning 30 years old this Valentine's Day (Feb 14). Or is it 30 years young? No, old I guess. When I was 15, I thought people my age were old. Boo hoo. I'll have to make it a celebration to remember.

From the brink

You may be wondering where I've been; my posts are certainly far and few between. To put it simply, I am finishing the editing of a novel and I have become completely immersed in its world. I cannot think about anything else at the moment. I cannot eat or drink or sleep until this is finished. Well, I lie, I do eat and I do drink. I sometimes sleep, too. I am trying my hardest though to finish this before Christmas so I have an extra present for my wife. Then, with her criticism on board, I can give it to a few other readers (my mentor in particular, if he still wants to see it).

There's so much to catch up on. Issue 6 of the Eclecticism Ezine has been out for a month and a half now. It took the most time and effort of all the issues, given its size and the variety of images. But it was worth it from one point of view - I think it's the best issue thus far. On another point of view, the zine needs more readers. I don't know if I can justify it if the readership does not pick up - the catch-22 is that I need to sink money into advertising to draw this readership, and the only way to do that is to start charging for the zine (which may lose some readers who only download it because it's free). Hmmmm.

On another note, one more year of University under my belt. One to go (a four-year course, plus Honours if I am nominated for that). I did quite well, I think - Distinctions and a High Distinction. I am very distinct.

And, looking at my last post, yes, I did meet Matthew Reilly. He was a lot of fun. He has a great slide-show that he goes through. He is very animated and the passion for his work is evident - I hope I can look like that one day. He even has the 'smile-for-the-camera' expression set - it was the same face for each photograph. Brilliant. My wife bought me one of his novels last Christmas, so he signed it 'Dear Craig, Merry Christmas'! What a great guy. (Just wish I'd dressed better, and smiled, and not looked like a tool in the photograph below, but I'd rushed over from prior engagements and so on...)

Now, who to meet next... Well, World Horror Con is moving to Brighton, England in 2010. Lots of people I'd love to meet there. We'll start locally though - I'll definitely make it to Swancon in April next year (2009), especially with Richard Morgan as the International Guest of Honour.

Matthew Reilly Tour

Hi all,
Four more weeks of Uni, then exams, and then I can resume a better pace of writing. But until then, I thought I'd let those interested know that author Matthew Reilly (The Six Sacred Stones) is touring Australia as part of the Big Book Club initiative, which sends authors to smaller, isolated places where reaching fans is otherwise usually inaccessible. Obviously Perth is isolated, so Matthew will be there from Sunday 26 October to Tuesday 28 October. I've booked my tickets. Of particular interest to me is the ferocious way he self-published and promoted his first novel, which deservingly launched his career.

Well, the State elections are tomorrow here in WA. I'm not going to offer my opinions, just that democracy doesn't work when the parties you are given to vote for are parties you would never vote for. Make sense? No. And who gets to decide who airs all the smear compaigns first? Is it a flip of the coin? Liberal keeps attacking with dodgy pictures of Labour's leader, Labour offer their rebuttal... I'm becoming a teacher to educate children, but it seems most people have never left the playground.

I was rather excited to learn today that Michael Connelly is releasing a team-up novel with his Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey Haller and world famous LAPD Detective Harry Bosch. It's called 'The Brass Verdict'. I thought the Lincoln Lawyer was an interesting diversion and the Bosch novels, well, crime fiction just wouldn't be the same without them. A fleeting glimpse of Melbourne

Well, my time in Melbourne came and went much too fast. Unfortunately I had to leave on the Wednesday before the crime writing awards and panels began, and before the AHWA had a launch of sorts. Damn, I looked at all the previous years of the Melbourne Writers Festival and planned the trip to suit the best panels, but this year the program was shaken up a bit.

I can't complain though - I had a ball; a writer's dream; a book-lover's paradise. I met and shook hands with John Marsden (who said my copy of his brand-new Hamlet novel was the first one he had signed), Tim Winton, and Max Barry, to name a few. Great to see Mr. Winton win the Age Fiction Book of the Year award for 'Breath' - I can't wait to peruse that as soon as possible. And thanks Max, for the short conversation and inspiring comments at your signing ("only a matter of time...").

And for the friends I met in Melbourne (and the familiar haunts from when I was living there), great to see you again.

Now it's back to reality. I had thought I would have completed a bulk of my Uni work, but alas, I was naive. And I have several reviews to finally write and post, a small pile of books to read for review, editing of my novel, writing, writing and .... BAM! I blew up just thinking about it.

To be honest, I'm just relaxing with my family for a while. It feels good.

Sorry, it's been a while. But I have been on *holidays*, which meant completing the five thousand little things I don't usually have time for, looking after my daughter full time while she was on holiday too, plus writing, editing my novel, and putting out issue five on the Eclecticism E-zine.

Just wanted to say thanks to the authors, editors and speculative fiction fans who said G'day to me at SwanCon - especially a big thanks to Shane Jiraiya Cummings for introducing me to so many great representatives of the spec fic field. Being a first (SwanCon) for me, I was quite overwhelmed, hence why I lingered in the shadows most of the time. But I hope to meet everyone again soon and take the conversations beyond pleasantries and other small talk.

And no, Eclecticism didn't win a Tin Duck, but the nomination is such a wonderful recognition in the e-zine's early days - let's see what happens next time!

My short fiction, "Zombie Brewing" will be appearing shortly in the Australian zine, Ripples (Issue 12).

It is a personal favourite, though has been hard to place. I think this is because the horror/zombie element is a metaphor for sleep-deprived, caffeine-craving cafe patrons, and not the usual straight, dark horror many zines are looking for. So thanks, editor Sam Cousins, for taking a gamble with me. It means a lot.

Yes, terrible title, I know. But the great news is that my e-zine, Eclecticism, has been nominated for a 2008 Tin Ducks Award, in the field of Best WA Fan Production. Not quite sure what I'm a fan of, besides great stories, poems and artwork (the original nomination ballots had Best WA Unpaid Production, which I'd thought was more appropriate, but the category was scrapped), but I can't express how wonderful it is for someone to actually nominate the e-zine at all. Thanks for the nod. And thanks again to all the wonderful contributors who've made the e-zine such fun to make.

For those who don't know, the Tin Duck Awards are "the annual Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation (WASFF) Achievement Awards for WA writers and artists. The awards will be presented at Swancon 33 “The State of the Art” to be held in Perth from March 20-24th." (information taken from the SwanCon website - see previous Tin Ducks link). Perhaps the best news for my writing thus far (getting a publishing contract would probably be one of the only things to top it off) is that I was chosen to be a Mentoree in the Australian Horror Writer Association's Mentorship program. My Mentor - fantastic Perth author Martin Livings (of Carnies and too-many-short-stories-to-count fame).

We will be working on the new novel I am currently writing, which has the working title 'Pseudonyms'. I am currently 40,000 plus words deep into that manuscript. It's a blend of pure suspense and psychological horror. Hopefully we'll shape up a great package to present to agents and publishers in the future.

Just a quick note to say I should be going to SwanCon (Perth, March 20-24) for at least one of the days, and later in the year I will be flying over to Melbourne to attend the Age Melbourne Writers' Festival (for 6 of the 10 days). These are two very exciting events for me as I haven't attended a writers' festival for a few years, and only then I basically just went to the workshops. These events will help keep me committed to taking my writing to a further level, and it will be great to meet and listen to other authors and fans.

Whoops, back again

Hi there, it's been a while. Well, December-January were just intense months for me. My wife had three (count them!) weeks off work, and since she has been pretty flat out in her new role I relished the moments spent together. However, since it was the festive season, add a few family birthdays, add several people going away to places like London (envious!), most of our budget was stretched, so we didn't go anywhere travel wise, the furthest being Mandurah (one hour away - whoo who!). It didn't matter though. I still had a few chances to write my new novel (first draft), though not as much as I would have liked. However, I can be a writing machine now, because... I have just finished the third issue of my e-zine, Eclecticism! 8 writers, 3 artists, 49 pages... Whew. It was an effort but worth it. So really this post is to plug the e-zine. I will divulge some info about my own life as soon as possible. I promise. It won't take a month and bit this time.

Wow, I am deeply honoured and very excited - yesterday my Eclecticism e-zine was archived in the National Library of Australia's Pandora Archive project. Pandora has been going since 1996 and collects online publications of national significance - with lasting cultural and research value. I am stunned my creation fits into such categories, but very proud it does. And of course it wouldn't have made it if not for the wonderful contributors (thanks everyone!).

Research can be fun!

Hi all,

Just wanted to extend a thanks to the folk at Lone Ranges Shooting Complex. I went there with my brother-in-law the other day for some handgun training to help with several scenes in my latest novel. It was a real thrill to try out a Smith & Weston and a Ruger .22 semi-automatic. I'll post some pictures of it real soon. This is all part of my practical research for my new novel, which I am currently five chapters into (at the drafting stage). See, research can be fun. I will probably go back soon to try some other makes/models too.

Next I will be doing a bit of 'urban creeping' - going into some rundown and downright weird places/buildings around Perth city and its suburbs. If anyone has suggestions I could add to my list, email me.

What next?

Having recently finished my second 'publication-worthy' manuscript (and I don't give such titles to everything I've written), my key goal is of course to get it represented, preferably by an agent, then published, preferably by a publisher. My next goal is to keep writing though. Writing is my drug - I can't stop after finishing one hit. So I thought I'd ramble about my plans for the near future, if only to get a list going for myself...

- Firstly, I have been researching other novels whilst completing AHM and have now started extending said research. I have carefully decided out of 2 of my better ideas which novel will be tackled next, though I will continue researching for the other choice too as it involves a lot of locations around the world I hope to travel to soon. For the novel I've chosen, practical research will now come into play - the fun stuff, though I still take it seriously (a little). I'll be cruising around Western Australia to soak in some sites perfect for a bit of terror (the novel is a thriller with key elements of horror, mostly fear). I'll be learning how to handle and fire a gun (can't wait), and much more... won't give too much away for now.

- When I finished my last novel, I had an outpouring of ideas for future novels for about a week straight. This time round, I have had lots of ideas for short stories - well, at least 10 good ones so far. So, although I would mostly like to push my career as a novelist, I know that getting your name out anywhere helps your cause, and so I will start writing these short stories and getting them out there...

That's not all I have planned, but that's a long ramble already, so... now you know I take my writing very seriously, even though I'm not a professional yet.

Oh yeah, and if anyone has any ghost stories from Perth, Western Australia, I am starting to get a little database of them going, so I'd love to hear from you.

Yes, even dark writers have a heart

I kept something personal for too long... bottled up so it upsets me whenever I think about it. But a couple of months before arriving back to Perth, my dog of 9 years, Ashley, died at my in-laws house (they were 'looking' after her). I still can't get over the irony in that - we'd been away for a year and a bit, less than two months to go before seeing each other and BAM...
She'd been a great rock in my life, bought when I was living on my own and needed company at 19, grown into a friend and companion I thought would always be there. Well, she is still, I guess...

So it's taken a while, and I thought I'd never get another dog again, but fate conspired against me. I'm glad it did. I was reading the local community newspaper last week when I saw an article about dogs needing homes at the council pound. One thing led to another and I was diverted to the RSPCA website. Then I instantly saw a dog I thought would be perfect, but hesitated, not sure I was doing the right thing, stalling for a few days until my wife insisted I went and looked...

Well, we saved another dog from death. I can't find any greater joy than that. And she is wonderful - fitting in very well, though she is absolutely full of energy since she is only 2 and big (German Shepherd X). Here's a pic:

We went shopping today and she ate the bottom half of the timber lattice gate, but that's another story (she didn't get all the way through!).

What's that word?

In an old post I was completing the editing of my Vampire novel and moaned about needing a newer, larger dictionary to compensate for the lack of so many words in mine. Well, a month or so ago I finally bought a new one - Collins Australian Dictionary Seventh Edition (pub. 2005). It was from a department store (Myer) and happened to be one of 2 (count em) dictionaries in the whole book section. That's something to whinge about - so many places I tried, beside a bulk bookstore like Borders or Dymocks, either had absolutely no dictionaries or ones intended for school children (aptly, School Editions). What's wrong? Do adults not need to clarify the definition of anything? Is our world so dumbed-down we understand everything everyone says?
Anyway, for those looking for a dictionary, you'll be interested to know I waited for a sale and shopped then - and I got that one for $19.95. It is a tank of a dictionary, hard cover and all - I saw it in Borders for $89.95. What a saving! So, what are you waiting for - Myers and every other department store has a sale every second week. Sales are just normal prices now. Chumps buy products that aren't marked down.

Horror Writers Group

Hi there,

Can anyone in cyberspace give me their impression of writers' groups? If you have a particular genre you are most fond of (eg. horror), does your group cater for this, or is it steered towards a more general look at fiction?

That said, does anyone know of a horror/dark fantasy/sf writers' group in the wild wild west (Western Australia)? Perhaps I am just spreading whispers of gossip here, but if there isn't one I would like a general show of interest to see if one's existence is valid. If numbers grow, perhaps the Australian Horror Writers Association might consider branching out into state chapters? I can only live the expansion dream for now...

The rush I need

Contrary to my last post, whilst returning to Perth I have still managed to carry over my writing time, at least at night after my daughter has gone to sleep. And I have nearly finished the first draft of my next novel, which is a fantastic feeling. I am remembering the adrenaline-like rush I experienced the last time I completed a novel, and I'm glad the feeling has returned. A few chapters to go and it will be complete, and I can party, sit back, then edit and edit and edit and edit and... well, any good writer will tell you to... EDIT!

So yes, as a reader you always need to read that last bit of the book - I don't ever think I've stopped with the last couple of chapters to go, even if it's three in the morning - and the same feeling is there when you are writing said chapters. It's a great, shared experience.

Homesick

Having been back in Perth for a month now, I constantly have people asking me if it's great to be back home. Well, in some ways it is - especially to see family and friends (the latter of which are yet to catch up with me, because everyone has settled into their own life routines that hardly match mine). In another way though, it isn't. I am homesick for a place that wasn't home to begin with - given the time spent in Perth (26 years) to Melbourne (2 years).

How can that be? Has anyone else experienced the same dilemma? It's not like when you go on a holiday and think the destination is a lovely place you wish you could spend more time in, but on greater reflection know the rainbow-glasses will crack after a few weeks. This is falling in love with a place because you've been thrust right into the middle of it, absorbed its culture and found that's the one that compliments your way of life - a perfect match, the wholeness to the emptiness I always felt in Perth that led me to constantly complain about its foibles.

Don't get me wrong, Perthians. This is a beautiful place... To raise kids and retire. Between those two periods in life though, I have yet to find avenues to engage me. But that's what I have to do, because there's no going back to Melbourne for a while. So what's the next step?

I guess it's like an arranged marriage (sorry for the terrible analogy) - you have to grow to love the one you're with. And I'll try, for now...but boy do I miss Melbourne.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Ranting is a good release.

Black Box E-Anthology

One of my latest stories, 'Hot Sauce', was accepted for publication in the Black Box E-Anthology (http://www.brimstonepress.com.au/blackbox.htm). The stipulation was that you hard to write a 'dark' horror story of only 120 words in length, which was actually a wonderful challenge! It will be published ~ January 2008, so I'll let you know more details closer to the date. The best part is I have snuck into a list of some really fantastic authors - hopefully, after readers have absorbed their stories, they'll see mine.

Back from the shadows

Hi all,

It's been a long time since posting - have so much to catch up on that I was deliberating whether to have one big post or a few little ones. I chose the latter. I haven't posted for so long because I have moved interstate (from Melbourne to Perth) with my wife and daughter, have worked furiously to get my ezine up and running on time (I somehow killed the 'new' computer I was given 2 days before the deadline, but still put it out on the day!), have spent weeks cleaning and repairing our house, have re-enrolled and started my education course at University (just one unit until next year), and jumped straight back into my next novel (of which there is only a little bit to go in the first draft stage).

Wow, in saying why I haven't posted I've given a rough glimpse of my life in the last month. Soon I will disect each point as best I can - so stayed tuned. If you are a returning reader, please be assured I will try to post on this site once a week (I am not organised enough to set aside time on an actual day each week though).

The Stats of Submitting

Hi all,

Wow. My last post didn't get any comments - guess I was just stating an obvious, well-known fact about the publishing industry. So, now I would like to give you an update as to the progress of my novel submissions. I told you I'd try to leave out the bitterness, but...No. Constructive criticism; and again, probably something every self-respecting author already knows and indeed something I prepared for when doing countless months of research into the industry: AUSTRALIA NEEDS MORE AGENTS!!!
You heard me. It's a pitiful scene down-under.

Why? Well, let me give you some stats:
Out of 21 agents I have approached thus far -

6 - are not taking new submissions/writers at the moment.
7 - are not willing to represent the sci-fi/fantasy/horror genres.
6 - have either disappeared off the face of the Earth or just don't want to respond to queries (and yes, this happens in the industry - but for the scene in Australia I think it's a joke (we aren't as big as the USA yet guys))
and
2 - said 'No' after accepting my query, then looking at my synopsis and 3 chapters.

So there you go.
When people give inspiring talks about a big-time author who had their book rejected 12 times before getting it published, I'm beginning to see that what wasn't mentioned were the countless other dead-ends that author had to pursue before getting 12 rejections. I mean, I've approached 21 agencies and have only had 2 actually look at my work.

What to do now? Well. The rejections didn't post any comments that could make me think about altering my work, so it looks like USA and UK are my next ports of call, while I'm waiting for those 6 full-listed agents in Australia to want new writers.

Rant time...

Today's topic: The idiosyncrasies of The (Australian) Text Publishing Company.

I've thought long and hard about whether or not to write about this irritation. Text Publishing is a great company here in Australia, don't get me wrong. They produce wonderful editions from a varied range of sources, except horror and dark fantasy. Well, they do, but don't. Confused? Yes, I am too, so that's why I'm ranting. Because when I queried Text Publishing for my 'Within' novel, I received a prompt reply that they do not publish horror or dark fantasy. Problem is, the book I am currently reading (just about to finish) is 'Let the Right One In' by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It is 'a vampire love story'. It is a horror novel (dark fantasy really, since the 'creature' is very much an interacting, human-like being who cannot bring themself to feast on the main character, their friend). And here in Australia, it is published by none other than Text Publishing.

A horror novel. In fact, Mr Lindqvist is billed as Sweden's equivalent of Stephen King. So, why don't the Text Publishing Company's publication guidelines and actual publications match up?
I'll tell you why.

'Let the Right One In' was already published in Sweden in 2004 and enjoyed great success. In fact, they are currently making a film version of it. So, it's a no-brainer. A sure-fire hit to make some money in Australia. Why not publish it?

What about Australian horror writers, Text Publishing? We can produce manuscripts of equal, if not better quality, but we aren't even given a chance to present them to you. How are we meant to compete? I'll tell you how, we push our novels to overseas agents and publishers - it seems to be the only way these days. You see, I was afraid of burning bridges writing this rant, but it is you, Text Publishing, who's burning bridges with Australian writers. No wonder 99% of our movie stars and famous writers move to LA, New York, London, etc. The very country they wrote about, they poured their heart and soul into to capture and reflect to the world, didn't even give them a chance. Instead, they gave someone from another country a chance (so, why not do the same elsewhere).

For shame, Text Publishing. Stick to your guidelines, or relax them to see that Australian horror writers are just as deserving.

And that is my rant for today.

That is enough web page creating for me...Back to the actual novel writing. You'd think I haven't done much lately but that's only been the last 3 days - apart from that (in the last week) I've written 3 pieces of short fiction and have reached the (roughly) halfway mark of the first draft of my next novel.
A lot of the next part of my novel takes place in Perth and many surrounding areas (the first part had a lot of scenes in Melbourne), so when I move back there next month creativity will certainly flourish.

I'm ba-ack

Hello everyone,

My parents have left today - have spent the last 10 days with us in Melbourne (from Perth). To put it simply, they spoilt my daughter rotten, and I like that! Though now we have to remind her that not everything she picks from the store's shelves will be bought just because she flashes a smile and asks 'P-p-please pay?'.
Yesterday we did something different and hired a car, taking it for a drive to the Werribee Open Range Zoo (as close as you can get to Africa and without the 2x4 cages of a normal zoo), and then across the coast along the Great Ocean Rd. I say different because for the entire time we've been in Melbourne we've hardly strayed from the suburbs that surround the CBD. So yesterday I learnt that Torquay is not just the name of a water bottle, that Bells Beach may look like an idyllic surfing spot but must first be navigated through a high series of cliffs, sans a beach (you can rest on the rocks you wash up on), that Lorne is somewhere I picture myself relaxing in another ten years (in one block there were 3 bookstores, though they were all shut by the time we arrived), and that Anglesea made a dream come true.

You see, I have a list. We have been in Melbourne for a year and a quarter now, and I have started to write a list of things we miss from our home city (Perth) - believe it or not, they are simple things. One of them is a large helping of traditional, greasy, cooked in an old-fashioned shop that reeks of the 80s, posters on the walls of catches they wouldn't actually sell in the store, fish and chips. Thank you guys in Anglesea for providing such an establishment, and such food. I bought and ate so much I couldn't move, so it was lucky we were sitting in the car.

Unfortunately I didn't take a business card. I have a habit of taking business cards from most places we visit - I could probably fill a shoe box by now. Writers, you might want to take note of this, because I find business cards are great, not necessarily to write about an exact location (lawsuit, anyone?), but to jog your memories of it - allowing food, smells, decor, and other general points of atmosphere to creep through so you can write about a place that you may not be able to visit again.

I've written enough for now, but at least have more material to regale you with over the next few weeks.

The e-zine cometh

Man, my dictionary is so worn from years of writing that after starting to post this message I've decided it finally needs replacing. I wanted to see if anyone actually used the word 'cometh' anymore. It's listed as archaic, so generally no, but I had to look up an internet dictionary to find that out. My dictionary is exclusionist - it only has modern words in it. I think I could have added another quarter-size to it with the words it didn't contain that I used for my novel. And no, the language in the novel is not archaic, though one of the Vampires speaks with a mixed palette. It's just that my dictionary is roughly Stephen King-novel size. I guess I need one of those doozies that weigh 5kg and take up half the writing desk.
I lost track of the point of my post. Ah, well, my wife had the last two days of work off so we were able to enjoy part of the easter break like a 'normal' family. On Thursday my parents are visiting us from Perth, Western Australia, because they miss their granddaughter (and not me, no, never), so the level of postings may diminsh over the next two weeks. In the meantime, I will let you know the e-zine I'm editing will be put onto the web soon - well, the information for it anyway. First issue should come out July 07 - still looking for writers, artists and musicians to submit. Here's the banner (but no link yet):

Thank God and City Planning for parks and playgrounds

Hi all,

For the last couple of weeks I have tried to write whilst my daughter is at the playground. It didn't start out too well at first, most of my subconscious having me dart my eyes continuously from the page to make sure my daughter hadn't jumped off the top of the pyramid-like slide feature. But after a while I quickly found how to make use of the brief intervals in which she was intrigued by a sandpit (even bought her a shovel and bucket) or a never-ending line of ants cutting across the swings. In this time I have written two short stories and now a growing chunk of my next novel.

I love Melbourne for this. The city is basically surrounded by parks, which makes for both beautiful and practical locations to take my daughter (and hey, nature is free and you gotta love that!). A friend from playgroup tried to start a correspondence script-writing course but found they had no time to fit the writing time around the children. When asked, I realised that I previously only had the night to claim as my own, but now I've opened up this new avenue and think more writers should embrace it. Koji Suzuki wrote Ring whilst bouncing his child on his lap - that's dedication to the craft!

So if you come my way and see a man absorbed in his writing, twirling his LAMY pen in the sunlight whilst pondering his next paragraph, and a child ten metres away dangling precariously from a swing, you'll know the deal. I have to make use of the only chances I get until I'm a full-time writer.

Call for Interest

Hi there reading and writing world,

This is a very early post to announce that I plan to start an E-zine/weblog to showcase more artists' creative talent. It will be starting late July/early August, and will be released monthly. This is the plan - input will direct the release frequency (hoping to get it fortnightly in the future).

When the date draws nearer I will be putting up more posts, links, and the relevant website. However, I would like to call on all short story, poetry and possibly novella writers, artists/illustrators, and musicians (that's right, I need some beats/riffs only for each release) to express your interest in the meanwhile. I would also like readers who've stumbled upon this post to express your interest in being able to read a varied range of works. You see, the zine will not be restricted by genre - in fact there will be a focus theme and an open submission section each release.

For the penny-pinchers (or those just trying to make a living) I will not be paying contributions upon start-up. Hope to in the future, but I am not a billionaire yet nor have I a product to start hawking for sponsorship. It will be a free to read zine and your work will be pushed to a large audience (if my plans come to fruition).

Do you know what really clogs my pen?

Now, I'm going to discuss the writer's dreaded enemy - the query letter - though you could substitute this for any other professional letter, eg. Resumes and Job Applications and ... okay, can't think of any more.

What I want to rant about is the Good vs Bad samples you always see. Every writing book and site presents two versions of a query letter. One is the Good version - really a pretentious version with so many beefed-up credentials it makes an emerging writer cringe and realise they must live two-lifetimes of employment before submitting their own letter.

The other version is the Bad one, and this is what I want to complain about. The Bad one seems typed by an IQ-challenged monkey, perhaps a turtle (because monkeys are smarter?), and cannot possibly represent anyone in the real world. If you, reader, have written queries stating your work is the best in the world and you're doing the agent/publisher a favour by giving it to them and you'd like a billion dollar advance though you've only half-finished the manuscript... well... no, like the tooth-fairy I just don't believe you exist (and if you do, please get every writing tool in your residence and throw them out now!).

So then surely someone can present writers with samples that represent a truly Bad version. Well, perhaps Bad is not the word, just...Lacking. Many queries are certainly lacking that extra edge - that catchy hook, a succinct word-count, a high-profile name to compare their work to, and so forth.

If anyone can point me in the direction of such an actual, HELPFUL set of samples, I will include it in future posts (and will start a LINKS section) and would be much appreciated. My wife would appreciate it too - one less bitter rant from me to put up with!

Within is ready to go out into the pool

Over 3 years and 7 drafts later, my first 'publication-worthy' novel has been completed. I cannot contain my excitement. I have written this novel in between working, my return to university (BA Education) as a mature student, moving interstate and then being a full-time, stay-at-home parent. I will now be sending it out to agents and publishers and will of course keep you posted on its journey, keeping bitterness contained should it arise.

The good thing about taking so long to write this novel is that I have also thought of a career's worth of ideas for future novels. I have actually started the next one whilst editing Within - 30,000 words in so far. So I will make sure that strange face to the side of this page is one you'll be seeing a lot more of in the future.

I will post a sample chapter (the first, obviously) from my novel very soon.

I have been trying to get an official site up and running to house more of my work and details, but now I'm starting to think this outlet may be appropriate for quite a while. Here is a very short story I wrote one night, the instant the idea snapped into my brain. Hope I can give some parents out there a smile.

HE’S HERE

Headlights swung through Henrick’s living room blinds, stirring him from a novel’s pages. Brakes squeaked. A handbrake snapped on. Henrick threw the book and fumbled below the couch. It was coming again. It wanted to whisk his child into the night.

Henrick despised the very notion. His hands clutched his shotgun as gravel crunched beside the window. He pulled it out whilst leaping from the couch, attempting to reach the front door first.

But the doorbell rang.

Henrick could hear his daughter running to her room and he wanted to join and console her but…He opened the door, shotgun cocked. The boy outside seemed unfazed. He simply smiled and asked for his date.

Hello readers, writers, random clickers of the mouse,

My name is Craig Bezant. I am an emerging Australian author who specialises in the Dark Fantasy (nee Horror) genre. Why do I say 'nee Horror'? Because bookstore buzz-words have drifted away from the association of horror and its blood-and-guts. And so well they should. Horror isn't always about senseless violence. In fact, it should rarely be. Leave that to the cinema where only 2 hours of your life will be robbed by a stereotypical slasher flick. A week or two reading the same sort of thing, well, in my opinion that's a waste of time.
So Dark Fantasy is more intelligent then? Well, I'm not saying the slasher stories can't be intelligent. There's always one or two a year that present a most entertaining story. Dark Fantasy relates more to having monster-like creatures who also have human-like feelings, eg. empathy. This presents a whole new world of storylines, ones which often blend with almost every other genre. I hope more agents and publishers start to realise this - you can do so much with a Dark Fantasy story.
